Discussions were held on the supply of "green energy" and hydrogen from Azerbaijan to Europe

May 12, 2025

A meeting was held between the Minister of Energy, Parviz Shahbazov, and the Director-General for Eastern Neighborhood and Enlargement Negotiations (DG ENEST) of the European Commission, Gert Jan Koopman.

Renewables.az reports, citing the Ministry of Energy, that the priority areas of energy cooperation between Azerbaijan and the European Union were discussed at the meeting.

It was emphasized that Azerbaijan's gas exports to the EU increased by more than 57 percent during 2021-2024, and the importance of investments and long-term contracts to expand the Southern Gas Corridor and increase supply volumes was noted. The EU's policy on financing gas projects was reviewed.

Director-General Gert Jan Koopman expressed special interest in cooperation with Azerbaijan, especially in the "Caspian-Black Sea-Europe Green Energy Corridor", within the framework of plans aimed at increasing energy and electricity trade between the region and the EU in the context of the Middle Corridor. During the conversation, information was provided on the feasibility study stage of the project, the processes carried out for its inclusion in the 10-year development plan (TYNDP) of the European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity (ENTSO-E), the fiber-optic component of the corridor, as well as the supply opportunities for "green energy" in the next stage. The prospect of connecting this corridor with the "Central Asia-Azerbaijan Green Energy Corridor" was brought to attention. Minister Parviz Shahbazov said that the project could connect Europe and Central Asia through Azerbaijan, which could ensure the transfer of large volumes of energy resources from Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan to Europe in the future and play an important role in terms of diversifying the energy supply of the EU.

The meeting also exchanged views on holding the third meeting of the Azerbaijan-EU energy dialogue.
